W alter Palmer was the immigrant ancestor of my Palmer line. He was born about 1585 in Dorsetshire, England. New information indicates he was probably from Frampton, Dorset, England. On 5 April 1629, Walter Palmer embarked on the ship Four Sisters at Gravesend, England and sailed to Salem, Massachusetts, arriving in June. He was one of the founders of Stonington, Connecticut. Both of my maternal grandmother's parents were descendants of Walter Palmer through his two wives, giving me five lines of descent from him through his children Grace (two lines through each great-grandparent), Nehemiah, Gershom, and Moses. One of my most treasured family possessions is the huge and beautiful, but well-worn old bible of my fourth grandfather, Asher Palmer of Griswold, Connecticut and Exeter, Rhode Island. Asher was the fourth grandson of Walter Palmer of Stonington. Inside the bible is a note written by my third great grandaunt, Sarah H. Palmer: |

Inside the bible, between Malachi and Apocrypha, were several pages of family records, inscribed over the years, with the births, marriages and deaths of the members of Asher's families from his two marriages. To view scans and transcriptions of these pages, click here. |
